While voice calling over cellular networks is taking a huge dip thanks to OTT services, Airtel is focusing on improving its fixed line business and it’s doing so by offering free unlimited voice plans to broadband customers. A total of two new subscriptions will be made available and they’ll both be affordably priced.
The first option will be tagged at just Rs 49 per month and will enable limitless local calls only. And if the need for nation-wide calling arises, you’ll have to shell out double the about (Rs 99 to be exact) for STD facilities. As far as we know, there will be no restrictions as to which networks or numbers can be calling through the unlimited plans.
While the new subscriptions will certainly improve things for Airtel, it will also greatly benefit businesses which rely on heavy calling. Of course, the plans are for non-commercial use and there are measures to prevent companies from abusing it. Currently, the telecom operator is offering fixed line services in over 87 cities across the country.

Airtel, however, isn’t the only operator to deliver such a service. BSNL has launched something quite similar, except that it isn’t going to charge customers an extra subscription fee. Free voice calling from its landline service will be available to all, but only during a limited timeframe of 9pm and 7am. Customers will be able to access the nation-wide no-cost calling from May 1 onwards.
In other news, Airtel’s Zero initiative has been taking a huge beating online. Flipkart which initially defended the service of being in limits of net neutrality guidelines decided to jump ship and is now in support for the cause.
Airtel’s new subscription for free voice calling for broadband customers can be availed online and there is a fair usage cap of 5000 minutes.
