Airtel hits out at Jio by offering free 4G data to new and old customers

Bharti Airtel has started offering one year of free 4G data to those who switch over from other networks as well as to old customers. The company will provide 3GB of data per month at no charge to new and existing subscribers alike. This decision is aimed at Reliance Jio which is currently extending free Internet, voice and SMS services to users until the end of March 2017.

Jio’s entry into the telecom market has made a dent the revenue shares of rival operators. Even the state-run BSNL has not been spared. Although Airtel remains the biggest service provider in India, it does need to stay vigilant in order to maintain its position. The free data plan is worth Rs 9000.

It is available to anyone with a 4G phone who wants to get on the company’s high speed network. This includes new users and even existing customers who wish to upgrade to Airtel 4G. Interested parties can sign up to the scheme starting today. Subscribers will get 3GB of extra data per month until December 2017.

Prepaid users on the Rs 345 scheme or postpaid users on an Infinity plan will be able to access the free data. BSNL already sells a Rs 144 pack which includes 300MB of data, and unlimited local and STD calls to any network across India. We expect that other operators will follow with free data offers too.
