The recently released findings of a research conducted by Pew suggest that 46 percent of adults residing in the U.S. now own a smartphone. Put together in the month of February this year, the study notes an 11 percent rise in the total number of smartphone owners as compared to May 2011.

The results of a similar survey carried out last year concluded only 35 percent adult residents in the U.S. could say that their handset was a smartphone. According to Pew, the definition of a smartphone owner encompasses users who would agree that they have a smartphone or a mobile phone running on a platform for the same.

This research also studied what type of smartphone a customer owns. 20 percent of the subjects participating in the survey said that they had an Android device, while 19 percent reportedly had an iPhone. The respective percentages were 15 percent and 10 percent in May last year. About 6 percent of this populace confessed to using a BlackBerry, down by 4 percent since 2011.

While the proportion of the aforementioned platforms has fluctuated as compared to the findings of the last research, the number of people using a Palm gadget or a Windows powered device remains the same. About 2 percent people use Windows handsets, while 1 percent can be accounted for as Palm owners.

This Pew study also concluded that about 8 percent mobile phone owners in the U.S. are unclear whether they can categorize their device as a smartphone or not.
