QiKU targets 1 million smartphone sales in India

QiKU has set itself a lofty target of selling 1 million handsets in India within its 1st year of operations here. The China-based brand is a joint enterprise between manufacturer Coolpad and software firm Qihoo 360.

QiKU has started its journey in India with the Q Terra, a mid-range device priced at Rs 19999 under an invite system and Rs 21999 without. The company’s Global Vice-President Alex Qian asserts that the nation is a very important region for the handset maker. While the Chinese market is currently flat and sluggish, the Indian sector is still on a growth curve.

He informed PTI that QiKU plans to expand its product portfolio in the subcontinent over the next couple of months. It will offer clearly differentiated offerings with the target of selling 1 million handsets in the space of a year. India is set to be the brand’s top market for the coming 18 months.

QiKU has already begun the process of fortifying its presence in the country by focusing their attention on R&D. As for after sales care, Qian claims it has already set up 200 service centers across India. Coolpad had launched a sub-brand of QiKU dubbed the Dazen in India earlier this year.

The QiKU Vice-President believes the 2 series can co-exist here in spite of the intense competition in the local market. He pointed out that there are companies which own two brand names in India and are doing well. He believes the key to this is to position the handsets differently in the market. For instance, Micromax has its own Yu brand, as does Lava with its Xolo range of devices.
