WhatsApp upgrade adds support for Bengali, Urdu, rich links

WhatsApp has released a slew of new features with version 2.12.367 of the app for Android users, including language support for Urdu and Bengali. Many of the changes were rolled out earlier in the year through builds accessible on the company’s site.

The upgraded WhatsApp lets users send and receive rich links which generate a preview of the content within the page. People also have the option to not include the new feature when sharing a URL. The function began rolling out to iOS users earlier in November. The app has further added support for Android 6.0 Marshmallow’s direct share tool.

Individuals are now able to send content such as images from within other applications directly to a specific WhatsApp chat. Additionally, a Starred Messages feature lets users bookmark messages, videos and images to a separate window under Menu. It can be accessed by long-pressing the message.

The new update also promises to cut down on data usage during WhatsApp calls. Furthermore, consumers can directly send a message or save a person’s details when receiving a contact card. Other changes consist of tools such as custom notification settings, marking conversations as read or unread, and the option to change the color of an emoji.

WhatsApp hit the 900 million active monthly users landmark back in September. It has a strong following in India, with over 56% of Indians logging in to the application everyday as per a Connected Life study conducted by consultancy firm TNS. The agency branded the country as being a ‘text-heavy’ market, with 38% of locals using an IM application on a daily basis.

Version 2.12.367 of WhatsApp for Android is now live and can be downloaded via the Google Play Store.
