Flipkart seems all set to go mobile-only later this year

We’ve already told you that Flipkart might transition to a mobile-only strategy in the coming months and it looks like the company has already started making preparations. A new report has surfaced stating that the company wants to build a new mobile application which will be able to deliver a shopping experience that’s closer to what you’d see in real life.

How exactly the e-commerce giants plans to do so is still a mystery, but it will be allocating its infrastructure and engineering resources to focus on this goal. So basically, Flipkart will have to completely overhaul its mobile applications which are already of top quality.

Speaking to the Economic Times, Punit Soni who is the Chief Product Officer at Flipkart revealed that ecommerce applications are heavily influenced by desktop and will need a complete redesigning. The objective is to create an app which is designed specifically for mobile and has social features baked in where you can get recommendations from friends or even shop with them.

Flipkart will also be hiring new talent from around the globe to create this shopping experience. And Myntra’s recent acquisition of mobile application development startup called Native5 could just be the first step in achieving this goal. The new purchase is said to be an acquisition-hire and will be integrated into the Flipkart technology team.

Punit Soni notes that the biggest challenge would be managing to create this experience without causing any harm to Flipkart’s current business model. According to reports, Myntra might soon shut its website and move to a mobile only approach. The -ecommerce giant in question will also be implementing the same strategy in the near future.
