Vodafone cuts roaming rates across India

If you travel a lot across India and have a Vodafone connection, the company has just revealed some great news regarding its roaming charges. According to the announcement, rates of incoming and outbound calls when out of an home network have been reduced by as much as 40%.

Basically, Vodafone customers will be charged 20% less for local calls and 23% less for STD. Even rates for sending text messages while roaming have been reduced by 75%. These changes have come about to meet the new guidelines introduced by TRAI which demands slashed ceiling rates and they take effect from May 1 which is tomorrow.

The current rate for outgoing local calls on national roaming is Rs 1 per minute, but will now be dropped to Rs 0.80 per minute. And for STD calls which were Rs 1.5 per minute, the operator has slashed the charge down to Rs 1.15. Even incoming calls have been affected where a rate of Rs 0.45 per minute has been fixed from the earlier Rs 0.75.

Coming to text messaging, the drop is a staggering 75% and it affects local and STD SMS. The existing rate for the former has been revised to just Rs 0.25 from Rs 1.50, while the latter stands at Rs 0.38 which is down from Rs 1.50. Along with the changes to its roaming rates across India, Vodafone has also launched a special roaming tariff plan for both postpaid and prepaid customers.

TRAI’s decision to impose new ceiling rates for national roaming will certainly hurt the revenue of telecom operators to a small extent in India. Then again, there’s a good chance that it will improve voice calling and text consumption and play as an advantage.
