Second gen Motorola Moto E: A review of its top features

It wasn’t a surprise when the second-gen Moto E was launched by the company, since Motorola was bound to refresh one of its most successful devices of all time. This new model didn’t take much time to reach India, and it’s now available for purchase exclusively via Flipkart at a price of Rs 6999.

While the device exists in LTE and 3G versions, only the latter has found its way into India for now. However, Motorola has announced that it will be releasing the LTE variant of the second-gen Moto E here soon.

Second-gen Motorola Moto E

Design-wise, there are no major differences between the last-gen and new-gen models of this smartphone. The new Moto E is still the bulky device that its predecessor was, making it a treat to hold. Using it with one hand is also a pleasure owing to the perfect screen size that this phone has.

While the old model went for a slightly small 4.3-inch display size, this one has gone for a 4.5-inch panel. Despite the resolution of 540 x 960 pixels remaining constant, it is still a pretty good panel to consume content on. Besides, it grabs the Gorilla Glass 3 coating, eliminating the need for screen guards.

Water-resistant coating is also present on the device, but Motorola has done away with the replaceable backs in order to make way for colorful bands that are also available via Flipkart right now. If you’re not pleased by those, there are grip shells to consider as well.

The new Moto E ships with claims of offering all-day battery. This depends upon the usage, but the 2390mAh power pack inside this gadget will surely take you through the day with normal use. While its 3G model grabs a 1.2GHz quad core Snapdragon 200 processor, the LTE variant impresses with its 1.2GHz quad core Snapdragon 410 CPU that is of the 64-bit nature.

One of the main gripes that we had with the first-gen Moto E was its sub-standard rear camera and the absence of a selfie snapper. They have both been addressed by the company this time around, by offering autofocus support to the 5MP rear camera and placing a VGA unit of the front of the device. You can’t expect photographic brilliance from these shooters, but they’re an improvement nonetheless. Moreover, the rear unit now supports 720p HD videos.

Here’s a quick glance at the key specs of the second-gen Moto E:

– Display: 4.5-inch IPS, 960 x 540 pixels
– OS: Android 5.0 Lollipop (Upgradable to next version)
– Processor: 1.2GHz quad core Snapdragon 410 (4G) or 1.2GHz quad core Snapdragon 200 (3G)
– GPU: Adreno 306 (4G) or Adreno 302 (3G)
– Memory: 1GB RAM, 8GB storage (expandable up to 32GB)
– Camera: 5MP AF rear, VGA FF front
– Battery: 2390mAh
– Weight: 145gms
– Dimensions: 129.9mm x 66.8mm x 5.2mm to 12.3mm

Coming to the software side of things, Motorola has of course equipped this smartphone with the Android 5.0 Lollipop OS. While things have been kept nearly stock, the company’s very own useful features like the Quick Capture functionality which lets you launch the camera by just flicking your wrist twice add a lot of flair to the overall experience.

New Moto E

This makes the second-gen Motorola Moto E a pretty good improvement over its predecessor, but thanks to players like Xiaomi, Micromax and others, there’s a lot of competition for it to face right now in India. If you’re interested in buying it, head over to Flipkart to place your order for its white or black model.
