Xiaomi seems to be secretly working on a smartwatch to compete with the Apple Watch

There has been a lot of talk about a certain Xiaomi smartwatch since 2014, but we haven’t seen anything concrete about the device till date. Well, a new report has surfaced claiming to have information about the wearable and the company has joined hands with another OEM to develop it.

GizmoChina is reporting based on information revealed by 36 Krypton, Xiaomi will be co developing its own smartwatch with Huami which also had a hand in the highly popular Mi Band that has seen quite a bit of success since its launch. Speaking of which, there’s also word on a second iteration to the fitness band, but details on it are scarce at the moment.

What we know is that it’ll look quite similar to the current model and have a lighter design with an NFC sensor onboard. Coming back to the device in question, the Chinese giant wants it to compete directly with the Apple Watch. Based on this alone, we can deduce that the Xiaomi smartwatch will end up being a premium release, sans the high price tag you’ll find on the latter’s accessory.

The Xiaomi smartwatch will apparently have a large dial on the front and pulse wave velocity identification technology which basically identifies a person from their unique pulse waves. There are a few downsides to this, however, as it’ll need quite a bit of power to function and could lead to poor battery life. Apart from these features, you can expect the dial to have a round design like that of the Moto 360 and a brushed metal finish for the overall body including the straps.

Xiaomi has already disclosed its intentions of developing a smartwatch. The only question left to be answered is when will we see it hit the market?
