Xiaomi Mi 4 India launch set for Jan 28 at Rs 20000, here’s how it compares to Mi 3

The Xiaomi Mi 4 smartphone will be ready to roll on January 28 for a price of Rs 20000 or so, and it will hit availability later in February. The information comes from none other than the company’s global VP Hugo Barra, and Manu Jain, head of India operations. You’re surely wondering how the upcoming phone compares to what must necessarily be called its predecessor now.

Let’s start with the fact that the Xiaomi Mi 4 could be costlier than the older handset by almost Rs 6000. It retains the same old full HD touchscreen, but arrives with a newer version of the MIUI software baked into Android KitKat. Its chip is an upgrade too, being a quad core Snapdragon 801 processor and then there’s 3GB of RAM instead of just 2GB.

Xiaomi has decided once again, to go with only two storage options of 16GB and 64GB on its forthcoming handset. If you remember, Apple did the same with the iPhone 6 and iPad devices. The outer design of the Mi 4 includes a hint of metal and curvy edges, which contrasts against the full plastic facade and severe corners of the Mi 3.

A selfie camera of 8MP resolution (but unfortunately, no flash) is present on the new Xiaomi handset. The 13MP rear lens should be comparatively better at low light shots and it’s got LED flash now. We’re not going to make any bets on battery life since the Mi 4’s predecessor carried a 3050mAh one in place of a slightly larger 3080mAh power house.

Xiaomi Mi 4 specifications list:

– 5-inch 1080p full HD screen
– Android 4.4 KitKat w/ MIUI V6
– 3GB RAM, 16GB or 64GB ROM
– 2.5GHz quad core Snapdragon 801 chip
– 8MP and 13MP cameras
– 3080mAh power house

Xiaomi Mi 3 features list:

– 5-inch 1920 x 1080p display
– Android 4.4 KitKat w/ MIUI V5 custom OS
– 2GB of RAM, 16GB or 64GB internal storage
– 2.3GHz quad core Snapdragon 800 processor
– 13MP main camera, 2MP front-facing lens
– 3050mAh battery

Of course, the major difference between the Xiaomi Mi 4 and its older brother is that Flipkart which serves as the official retail outlet for the brand in India, isn’t selling the latter any more. So there’s not much going in terms of choice if you’re a fan of the brand, unless you don’t mind picking up the retired smartphone through eBay or something.
