Gionee Elife S5.1 ‘world’s slimmest smartphone’ launched for Rs 18999

The Gionee Elife S5.1 which is not the world’s thinnest smartphone anymore, has been finally launched in India after months of teasing and the device is being offered for Rs 18999. The phone is amongst the slimmest in the market, having a design that’s just 5.1mm thick and it can be yours from next month.

The Gionee Elife S5.1 was initially touted as the slimmest smartphone on the globe, but that title was short-lived as Oppo’s R5 made its debut with an even thinner design of 4.85mm. Well, the latter phone isn’t going to hold onto the crown for long either as there’s an even slimmer handset in the works from Chinese OEM Vivo.

Back to the handset in question, it’s the successor to the Elife S5.5. But instead of having better specs, the device is a downgrade in various aspects. Firstly, the display size is now 4.8 inches and the panel is a 720p HD Super AMOLED screen which is a huge drop. Processing power comes from a 1.7GHz octa core MediaTek chipset, while memory is taken care of by 1GB RAM and 16GB of internal storage.

The biggest downside of ultra slim designs is that there’s no room left for a microSD card slot and the handset is single SIM only. Additionally, the Gionee phone carries a 2100mAh battery and two cameras of 5MP (front) and 8MP (rear).
