Micromax joins hands with Cyanogen to launch a new sub-brand Yu

A Micromax Yu brand of smartphones running on Cyanogen is being prepped for launch in India, according to a fresh new report. If you’ve been keeping an eye on the headlines, you’ve already heard rumors of an upcoming Canvas 5 handset set to arrive powered by the well known Android fork.

Now it’s not been confirmed whether such a Canvas 5 is indeed landing on shelves. But a recent post on TOI which cites PTI as the source, notes that Micromax’s Yu Televentures subsidiary has inked a deal with the Cyanogen folks to produce devices under the aforementioned branding.

You’d think that Micromax would be slightly nervous about taking a hit in terms of sales owing to the forthcoming Yu lineup, right? But the former’s co-founder Rahul Sharma, says the latter series will mostly be aimed at tech buffs. That’s a segment with plenty of space for growth.

The first Micromax Yu handset is expected to have its release date marked for next month, or December. It may possibly be too early to expect word on the price details of the phone. Sharma promises potential buyers that it will offer value for money, always a selling point in a market like India.

What’s more, the Yu devices will be supported by a forum in order to enable users to voice their ideas or suggestions. The company also intends to listen to what customers are saying or the problems they’re airing, and launch software updates each fortnight based on the feedback provided by them.

Incidentally, Google is said to be either keen to shut down Cyanogen or covetous of its position in China. The tech giant apparently made a $1 billion acquisition offer that was turned down by the developers. Every phone that does not run on the standard version of Android means one less visitor to Play Store.

Meanwhile, what do you think about the imminent unveiling of the Micromax Yu smartphone? Do we need another Android fork or do you prefer the stock version by Google on your handset?
