Khan Market in Delhi is a free Wi-Fi zone now and it looks like plans for similar Wi-Fi services in Connaught Place will come into fruition soon enough. The project has been undertaken by the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) along with carriers Vodafone India and Tata Docomo.
But the free Wi-Fi hotspot area setup in Khan Market does not offer free unlimited access to users. They can only avail of it at no cost for the first 20 minutes after which customers can purchase additional data online or through a retail store vending top-ups. Tata Docomo has revealed the price to be Rs 20 for 40 minutes of usage.
If you need more time than that, it’ll cost you Rs 30 and Rs 90 for 60 minutes and 100 minutes, in that order. Those who wish to take advantage of the free Wi-Fi zone will be required to submit their mobile number and email ID. They will then get a one-time password which will permit them to connect to the web.
The Economic Times mentions the project’s head, O P Mishra, as saying that it has been going smoothly so far. But there’s a small hiccup in setting up cables and transmission wires for the Wi-Fi hotspot in Connaught Place. The equipment is presently being moved so they travel through the 1.2km utility tunnel in the area for aesthetic reasons.

Tata Docomo is already delivering similar Wi-Fi services in several other locations including the Delhi Domestic and T3 International Airport, Feroz Shah Kotla Cricket Stadium and others. Connaught Place is expected to be treated to the same free Wi-Fi zone as Khan Market by the end of August 2014.
