Government wants suggestions on how to increase use of broadband in all of India

With around 50 percent of its entire broadband infrastructure lying idle, the government of India has been forced to ask for suggestions from the industry over how to increase its use. This broadband development came to fore at an i-Bharat event that was organized by industry body FICCI recently.

Reaching Indian villages is the main point of concern for broadband usage, and constructive steps towards the same are indeed being taken right now. The government of India is currently working in order to connect all the 2.5 lakh panchayats of India with high speed broadband internet.

However, there is again a hindrance in this activity due to the fact that most villages don’t even have the basic infrastructure needed to set up such facilitates. The aim is to connect all 2.5 lakh gram panchayats from their block headquarter with broadband in the coming three years, providing them with access to a minimum speed of 100Mbps.

But for now, the issue at hand remains what to do with the under-utilization of available broadband. Both the Indian government and other stakeholders are now faced with finding why the adoption of the technology in the private sector is still not speeding up.

According to The Economic Times, Joint Secretary at the department of electronics and IT (DEITY), Rajendra Kumar has asserted that the government is even ready to provide the infrastructure needed to improve utilization of broadband. However, the impact that’s expected still cannot be achieved.

He revealed that out of 252 planned broadband projects, 222 are operational, but what’s needed now is transformation which can be done through integration of services, providing core IT infrastructure on demand and more.
