Obi Mobiles plans to introduce Firefox smartphone in India

Obi Mobiles is a company in its infancy and is soon to take on the heavily crowded smartphone market in India by launching new handsets including a device based on the Firefox OS. Run by former Apple CEO John Sculley, the company hasn’t provided any concrete information on the phone powered by Mozilla’s mobile OS.

In fact, Obi Mobiles is still in talks with Mozilla over a possible Firefox smartphone, so the device is a long way from materializing. Speaking to ET, the company’s chief executive officer of India, Ajay Sharma, mentioned that they plan to launch the smartphone by the end of this year itself. Additionally, the phone might be priced higher than the competition which includes the Intex Cloux FX and an unnamed Spice phone, both of which will retail for under Rs 2,000.

These Firefox devices will have basic features such as a 3.5-inch HVGA display, a 1GHz processor, a 2MP rear camera, dual SIM support, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth amongst others. The phone from Obi Mobiles will most likely come with better hardware considering that it plans to charge buyers more than the competition. Where its upcoming Android phones are concerned, the company will unveil a new range priced between Rs 5,000 and Rs 15,000 with most devices tagged under Rs 10,000.
