Internet users in India most likely to trade their privacy for convenience

A study conducted recently has highlighted something that’s quite concerning, even as it has shown that Indian people are most likely to give away their private information online if it grants them convenience in exchange. The country is followed by regions from the Middle East and China/Hong Kong, while folks from Germany emerged as the most reluctant to compromise their private data online.

This study was carried out by a technology firm named EMC and its results show that 61 percent of all the respondents of India are willing to trade privacy for increased convenience. That’s quite a large number, and one would have to reflect as to whether people from the country really are aware about the dangers that lurk around on the Internet.

EMC Findings

15,000 participants from 15 countries worldwide took part in the survey, and among them include those from India, Brazil, Italy, Japan, the US, Netherlands and Canada. The aim of this study was to find out how consumers from around the world view their online privacy rights. Measuring their willingness to forfeit the conveniences for the assurances of privacy was also the focus.

Among all the Indians who appeared willing to give up their privacy, 57 percent have turned out to be men and 41 percent, women. According to Rajesh Janey, who’s the president of EMC Corporation’s operations in India and SAARC nations, the fact that India is a relative newcomer in the Internet world has a lot to do with these results.

In an age when privacy scandals are breaking out every now and then on the Internet, this study has thrown open a big area of concern for people living in India. Awareness is definitely required in the field.
