Bharti Airtel to instate PD Sarma as managing director of Airtel Bangladesh operations

Bharti Airtel is reportedly in the process of relocating one of its hub CEOs, PD Sarma into Bangladesh, in its bid to facilitate the growth of data services in the neighboring nation. He is to become the managing director of the Airtel’s operations there, replacing the current MD, Chris Tobit, who in turn is being relocated into India.

If Sarma’s current portfolio is to be looked at, he is handling the CEO-ship of a high profile region consisting West Bengal, Kolkata, Odisha, Assam and Northeast circles. One of these territories – Kolkata – noticeably received 4G LTE support for mobile devices via Airtel recently, allowing faster data speeds to reach its customers.

Gopal Vittal, who’s the CEO of the Bharti Airtel right now, is to whom PD Sarma will be reporting directly to. Chris Tobit, who is to migrate from Bangladesh to India as a result of this shuffle won’t take over Sarma’s position in the company. He will instead be given a leadership role which is yet to be finalized.

All this information was revealed by one of the firm’s spokespersons to The Economic Times in an emailed response to the newspaper’s query. Sarma’s immediate job at Airtel Bangladesh will include increasing the market share of the company’s 3G data in the country and also seeing to it that its tower assets are sold swiftly to its group tower arm, Bharti Infratel.

While Airtel is the biggest telecom operator here in India, it occupies the fourth spot in Bangladesh, coming in behind Grameen Phone, Banglalink Digital Communications and Axiata. One of PD Sarma’s long term goals will also be to leverage the company’s status in this department.
