Motorola Moto E Android smartphone : Review of its best and worst features

There’s no doubt that the Motorola Moto E threw Android smartphone manufacturers with a presence in India into a tizzy when it got unveiled earlier this month. These companies never would have thought that their reign over the affordable phones market would be challenged by a mainstream brand such as Motorola.

But the Motorola Moto E has, and that too in style. At Rs 6,999, you are bestowed with a smartphone that runs the latest Android software and grabs attributes such as a decent dual core CPU from Qualcomm, a 5MP camera, resistance to water and scratches and a 4.3-inch display.

When we talk about the best features on this Moto handset, then have to divert your attention towards its superb build. Its bulky but smooth feels premium to hold. The stylish Motorola dimple and a front-facing speaker add flair to its looks. And then there are the separately sold back shells which come in various colors.

The Motorola Moto E device performs pretty satisfactorily. Sure, it does not wreak havoc on benchmark scores, but using it for daily tasks like navigation, instant messaging, Internet browsing, gaming and more is an extremely speedy experience. This is helped in part by its nearly-stock version of Android 4.4 KitKat, and heavy use does not drain its battery as much as you’d expect other devices of its class to.

Flexibility is one more aspect that could draw you towards the Moto E. While the X and G did not grab provisions for external storage, this one does. It makes the 4GB of default storage bearable and also, dual SIM card slots are something we cannot refuse.

The worst part of this device has to be its camera. This 5MP unit which does not even come with a flash, seems primitive to say the least. Its fixed focus nature results in horrible photos of close-by subjects, but you can capture faraway images in a satisfactory manner. If you love video-calling, this phone is not meant for you as it has abandoned a front camera to keep the cost down.

The display on the Motorola Moto E isn’t something you’d be singing praises about with its low pixel density, average resolution and bad viewing angles. However, at a price point like this, we wouldn’t expect anything more than this. Another point that might hurt you about this handset is its availability. Since it can be bought only via Flipkart, it goes frequently out of stock due to high demand, which might force some to go for other similar options like the Micromax Unite 2 or the Lava Iris X1.

You have read the best and worst features of the Moto E, but the point that you should not forget is that it is priced at Rs 6,999. With these attributes coming at such a low price, many would be happy to settle for a less-than-average camera or other small shortcomings.
