Internet Spy system ‘Netra’ launched by Indian government

The Defence Ministry of India will soon launch a spy system that goes by the name of ‘Netra’ and has been assigned the task of detecting keywords in order to prevent attacks on the nation. It can detect a set of words through all social networking websites and report the authorities about the same.

So next time you log into Twitter, Facebook, Skype, GTalk, WhatsApp, blogs, forums or any other social networking and instant messaging service, be careful to not use words like ‘attack,’ ‘bomb,’ ‘blast,’ or even ‘kill.’ A few seconds is what the system will take to detect the usage of any of these terms. And that’s not all, internal calls such as those made through Skype and GTalk and voice traffic passing through software will also be monitored and detected.

This information was revealed in a note by the department of telecommunications, reports Economic Times. As we speak, Intelligence Bureau and Cabinet Secretariat are testing Netra. Once it passes all the testing stages, it will be installed at all the national security agencies. The Defence Research & Development Organization has a branch under them called Centre for Artificial Intelligence & Robotics (CAIR) which has designed this particular internet surveillance system.

At a meeting held between the top government organizations, it was decided that 300GB of storage space for intercepted internet traffic is slated to be assigned to IB, Cabinet Secretariat and another agency, whereas 100GB will be given to some other law enforcement agencies. A national internet scanning & coordination center is also likely to be established in India.
