WhatsApp Payments lets you scan QR codes to send money now

The latest WhatsApp for Android beta has added a nifty new feature for those who don’t want to type a person’s UPI ID every time they want to send a message. Instead of going through all that effort, users will be able to scan a QR code.

This QR Code option is present in WhatsApp for Android beta version 2.18.93 and above. To access it, individuals will have to make sure they’re on the newest build and then head into Settings > Payments > New Payments and choose the Scan QR code option.

The other option is ‘Scan to UPI ID’ which is another tool WhatsApp added recently. Rather than looking for a specific conversation and then attaching money, people can now directly send someone cash by entering their UPI ID.

With the arrival of the QR code option, individuals will just have to hover their camera over the graphic, input the amount to be sent, and then enter their UPI PIN for verification purposes. This could be especially useful for businesses who can just hang their code for customers to scan and pay.

This business model is pretty similar to Paytm’s, so we’ll have to wait and see whether WhatsApp Payments will be able to give its rival worthy competition when it officially launches. The platform is still being tested across Android and iOS, with no release date in sight.

You can download the latest version of WhatsApp for Android beta via APKMirror. WABetaInfo reports that the build also includes a GIF search, Sticker search, and GIF starring option. All are disabled for now, but will probably get enabled in the near future.
