Samsung W510 and F268 – Two New Bio-Degradable Handsets

The “Go Green” Fever has caught on to most of the mobile phone manufacturers. This contagious enthusiasm has now struck Samsung as well. The company has announced the launch of two new eco-friendly mobile phones, namely the W510 and the F268.

The W510 is termed as the Bio Cover Phone for its material use of bioplastic material made from cornstarch and is manufactured using an environmentally-friendly metal finishing process. It also does away with Mercury, Lead or Cadmium. The SGH-F268 has been designed eliminating the use of brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) as it is harmful to people. The phone comes packed with eco-friendly accessories that include a headset and a charger. When the charging is complete, the device alerts users to unplug the charger via an alarm function.

According to Geesung Choi, President of Samsung’s Telecommunication Business, “Samsung is striving to continue to be a strong corporate citizen that contributes to environmental sustainability. Now we are trying not only to launch more environmentally-conscious products with more renewable material and less energy consuming, but also to expand proactively set up a phone recycling system”

Officially no information regarding the features of the phone is released. However, the W510 apparently comes bundled with a photo camera with flash, a wide display and mobile TV capabilities.

The Samsung F268 mobile phone is equipped with a 2.1 inch TFT display (262K colors and 240 x 320 pixels), a 2 Megapixel camera with video, Media player (supporting MP3, AAC, WMA, MPEG4 and 3GP) and FM radio. It is tri-band GSM compliant and supports Bluetooth 2.0, WAP browser, USB and microSD card slot.

Both the Samsung handsets are slated to reach the market in June 2008. But the W510 will hit the Korean market, whereas the F268 will be available in the Chinese market. Price is still a mystery.
