Apple CEO Tim Cook to visit India, meet PM Narendra Modi

Apple CEO Tim Cook is all set to make his way to India as part of the second phase of his Asian tour. The visit will supposedly take place this week post his China excursion.

The news comes just a week after it was rumored that Foxconn was getting ready to manufacture iPhones in India. According to two insider sources, Cook is planning to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi when he arrives here. This nugget of information is especially interesting considering the fact that Make in India is one of the PM’s pet projects.

Cook had previously stated that he sees a huge market potential in India and was taking steps to improve Apple’s standing in the country. The company has experienced several setbacks over the past year, having to contend with declining iPhone sales and falling profits.

India is increasingly proving crucial for Apple’s long-term success. The firm’s plans encountered a roadblock recently when its scheme to sell refurbished iPhones in India got rejected by the government. If it had gotten approved, it would have allowed the brand to sell its wares to price-conscious consumers without compromising on its premium image.

It’s not clear whether Cook is visiting India to convince Indian officials to reconsider their decision. A source told Thomson Reuters that the CEO plans to fly to India on May 17 and hold meetings with employees and partners.

Cook recently declared that Apple was investing $1 billion into Chinese taxi app Didi Chuxing. The unexpected move was cryptically announced as a way for the company to better understand the Chinese market. It’s possible he has similar plans for India as well, given Apple’s limited presence in the Indian market sector.
