Samsung skips in with Galaxy 5 I5500 handset

Samsung Galaxy 5 All those reveling within a restive social circuit may want to thank the makers of this latest smartphone. Samsung has revealed plans to introduce the Galaxy 5 I5500 handset aimed at letting users stay connected to others while on the move. The device is powered by the Android 2.1 OS and accommodates a TFT 2.8” QVGA LCD screen.

The phone houses a 2MP FF camera that supports capture of videos in MPEG4, H.263, H.264 formats. The audio functionality is backed by a music player that plays songs in MP3, ACC, ACC+, eAAC+ formats. Additionally, users can listen to FM radio through the 3.5mm ear jack. The exterior of this Bluetooth v2.1 ready gadget has been embedded with a USB v2.0 port. Apart from the wireless connectivity which is supported by Wi-Fi 802.11b/g, the device integrates the AllShare technology. This enables connection with all DLNA gadgets in order to control and view images, play music and share videos.

“The Galaxy 5 is designed to cater to the needs of the millennial generation and offers instant access to social networks coupled with a bold, intuitive design,” affirmed JK Shin, President and head of the Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics. “The product will deliver dynamic, social experiences to consumers and always-on connectivity. The constant access to your social world means that the Galaxy 5 will keep up with your busy lifestyle and never slow you down.”

The storage capacity of the phone is supplied by internal memory of about 170MB as well as a 1GB microSD card. Users can expand the storage capacity of the phone to about 16GB. The gadget supports 2.5G 850/900/1800/1900MHz and 3G HSDPA 7.2 MB/s 900/2100MHz networks. It runs on a 1200mAh battery which offers a talk time of about 571 minutes and a standby time 521 hours on a 2G network and a talk time of around 387 minutes and a standby time of 375 hours on a 3G network. The gizmo can also be used as a remote control for Samsung TV or enjoy video games on a notebook.

The I5500 integrates Social Hub that allows users to manage their contacts on social networking sites and access to apps from the Android Market. What’s more, users can avail of services offered by Google Mobile. The Layar Reality browser lets owners locate places and discover interesting information by pointing the device to a POI. Navigational functions are encouraged through Google Maps as well as the built-in A-GPS system. The device accommodates HTML5 and HSDPA 7.2 for faster data transfer speed and web browsing.

Apart from the TouchWiz 3.0 UI that delivers a quick and spontaneous experience, the device features Swype for enhanced text input functionality. This technology boasts of an enhanced ability to predict and complete the word being typed ensuring faster messaging. Typed texts can be put up as Facebook statuses or as e-mails. The dimensions of the handset have been calculated to be about 56mm x 108mm x 12.3mm and it weighs about 102g.

Samsung’s Galaxy 5 is expected to hit markets across China, Europe, Latin America, Australia, SEA, SWA and EMEA in July next month.
