RIM recently announced that the BlackBerry 7 and 7.1 OS platforms have received the official certification and nod of approval from the governments of USA and Canada. The operating systems have been awarded the FIPS 140-2 which is recognized by the governments of both countries and is required under the Federal Information Security Management Act of 2002.
This FIPS 140-2 certification has been endowed on the new generation BlackBerry OS by the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the Communications Security Establishment Canada. The RIM handsets that are powered by the BlackBerry 7 and BlackBerry 7.1 OS and which would benefit from this approval include the BlackBerry Torch 9850, 9860 and 9810, BlackBerry Curve 9350, 9360, 9370 and 9380 and BlackBerry Bold 9900, 9930 and 9790.
“The FIPS 140-2 certification for BlackBerry 7.0 and 7.1 illustrates RIM’s continuing commitment to providing industry-leading, secure, mobile computing platforms for our customers. With all of the latest BlackBerry smartphones and the PlayBook tablet certified under the FIPS program, government and security-conscious customers can deploy our entire range of products with confidence,” cited Scott Totzke, Senior Vice President, BlackBerry Security at RIM.

Prior to the FIPS 140-2 ratification, the BlackBerry 7 OS had also been the recipient of the Common Criteria EAL4+ certification which was bestowed upon the platform back in November last year. Furthermore, the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet had already received the FIPS 140-2 validation in July 2011.
The BlackBerry 7 and 7.1 OS certification news follows close on the heels of another RIM revelation where the company recently announced the availability of the BlackBerry Business Cloud Services for Microsoft Office 365.
