The freshly introduced Nissan Scratch Shield iPhone case boasts of the company’s self-healing paint finish which features flexible and elastic properties that facilitate the automatic mending of fine scratches. This paint technology which was fashioned back in 2005, has already been employed with various Infiniti and Nissan products.

The smartphone case has been constructed from ABS plastic, commonly used in the automotive industry for its durability and robustness. This accessory tightly encases the iPhone and possesses a tactile gel-like surface which is said to be more effective in securing the mobile device against scratches as compared to the traditional glossy ones.

Bob Laishley, Overseas Programme Director Business Development for Nissan in Europe, stated, “We like to think laterally by taking the great innovations we’ve got from an automotive point of view, and looking at how they could be applied to improve everyday issues. The Scratch Shield iPhone case is a great example of us taking a Nissan automotive technology that has had a huge impact for our customers, and then shifting the boundaries to apply it to another everyday product. In Japan, we’ve already linked up with world-leading mobile operator NTT DoCoMo to allow them to use the Scratch Shield technology on its Style Series N-03B mobile phones, and we think this technology has real scope beyond the automotive world.”

The exterior paint is made from polyrotaxane that contains a chemical structure which can repair a fine scratch and change it to the original flawless shape by filling the gap. This healing case has been developed by Nissan in collaboration with the University of Tokyo and Advanced Softmaterials.

A small batch of the Nissan Scratch Shield iPhone case prototypes has been created for beta testing with selected journalists and consumers and if the accessory appears to have a strong demand then the company will start producing it at a commercial scale later this year.
