Moving ahead to increase the wireless capacity of its 3G mobile broadband network, AT&T announced the completion of its local initiative in Manhattan, Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens. With this upgrade, users can experience improved 3G wireless voice and data connectivity and performance during peak hours.
To efficiently manage available spectrum and increase 3G capacity, the network enhancement adds on new layers of frequency, also known as ‘carriers’. Nearly all cell sites in Manhattan can enjoy this addition and other areas as needed throughout the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens. With this upgrade, users can experience an increased allocation of network resources for 3G which supports the demand for mobile broadband services.
“Our goal is pretty simple: in the city that never sleeps, we’re working 24/7 to make sure our customers have a great experience every time they make a call, check e-mail, download a song or video, or surf the Internet on their AT&T device. Adding more capacity to cell sites is just one way we are doing that,” commented Tom DeVito, vice president and general manager for AT&T in NY and NJ.
A Wi-Fi hot zone has been deployed in Times Square by AT&T for customers to stay connected in one of the busiest location namely ‘America’s Crossroads’. With its super fast 3G network, the company has added a high-performing 850MHz spectrum in New York. This addition will deploy more radio capacity and enhance in-building coverage throughout the city.
With the deployment of HSPA 7.2 users can now experience faster 3G speeds. These speeds are said to be available later this year as well as in 2011 on a market by market basis. In the near future, the company plans to upgrade its network to HSPA+ in its 3G platform. This upgrade is said to improve the quality of voice by 47% quarter over quarter in Manhattan.
The company is said to deliver voice services in over 220 countries, data service in more than 195 countries, data roaming coverage on 130 major cruise ships and 3G services in around 115 countries.
