A revelation by the Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha has confirmed that Motorola will indeed be focusing on handsets powered by Google’s Android operating system for the year ahead.

This confirmation was made at the company’s Q4 conference call where the struggling handset maker reported a $3.6 billion loss in the Q4 2008. Motorola will also make a strategic shift in 2010 to Windows Mobile when Microsoft is expected to release Windows Mobile 7.

Mr. Jha stated that, “Yes, we are still committed to Windows Mobile. As you know, Windows 6 series is available in 2009 and as compared to Android, we believe in 2009 Android is more competitive; more of our effort and focus in 2009 is going to Android, but in 2010 when Windows 7 will become available, we will then participate in a more focused way to Windows Mobile 7 in 2010.”

The news was quite expected with Motorola reducing its Windows Mobile workforce. Much of the success of this partnership will depend on US carrier AT&T picking up Motorola’s new Android handsets.
