Nokia logo Nokia India announces its “recycling campaign” for the Indian region. The programme encourages mobile phone users to dispose of their used handsets and accessories, irrespective of the brand, at any of the 1,300 green recycling bins put up across Nokia priority dealers and Nokia care centers. This effort is to make the users aware of the recycling of e-waste.

Nokia India VP and managing director D. Shivakumar says “As market leaders in mobile devices, we have a unique opportunity to make an impact that goes beyond our own business. As responsible leaders, we want to drive best practices in our industry.”

Nokia will begin the initiative from Delhi and then gradually roll it out in the rest of the country. The company will shower surprise gifts as well as planting a tree for every handset dropped. After a survey conducted by Nokia on the awareness level of recycling of mobile phones they found out that only 3 percent of people recycled their phone and rest 50 percent are still unaware of the recyclables of phones. Nokia will then launch an electronic waste management initiative targeted at India as it stands lowest in the awareness.

The used handsets contain many valuable materials which can be recovered and reused in manufacturing new products, everything can be recovered from the old mobile phones and nothing goes to useless. Nokia is making an effort to recycle e-waste to ensure a safe end treatment of used devices as well as make the society grow even greener by planting trees.

Anti-spam: I really want to appreciate the initiative that NOKIA has taken. This step will contribute something to reduce the global warming. I can see a lot of people talking about the environment and crisis of global warming but they don’t know how to deal which such crisis, this is all due to lack of awarness. I would like to see some more steps such as awareness camps, publishing the recycling techniques on the each box of Handsets and many more from the leader in mobile devices i.e. NOKIA… Thank and best wishes of New Year 2009…
