A man from rural northwest Alberta has managed to run up a mobile phone bill amounting to a whopping $85,000.
The man in question is Piotr Staniaszek, a 22- year old oil and gas well tester. He actually believed that he could use his sleek new mobile phone as a modem for his computer.
He has subscribed for a $10 unlimited mobile browser plan from a Canadian mobile company. But, things surely did not work out in his favor. Staniaszek happily downloaded high definition movies and other large files via his mobile phone mode. He was so ignorant of the massive charges involved.
“The thing is, they’ve cut my phone off for being like $100 over. Here, I’m $85,000 over and nobody bothered to give me a call and tell me what was going on,” Staniaszek was quoted as saying.
His father said, “He’s working in the filed sometimes alone in the shack. What to do? Drink vodka or go on the Internet.”
The mobile phone company has reportedly lowered Staniaszek’s bill to $3243 as a goodwill gesture.
Staniaszek’s father also said that his son was quite reluctant to talk to the press, saying that he is afraid to use his mobile again, and run up further high charges.
