Just one look at it unlocks this ‘iris-scan’ handset by Fujitsu and NTT DoCoMo

NTT DoCOMo will be releasing a new smartphone with iris-scan unlock at the end of this month, because fingerprint unlock is yesterday’s news. Dubbed Fujitsu Arrows NX F-04G, all you will need to do is glance at the Arrows NX F-04G in order to access it. This is the first time ever that iris authentication technology has been integrated into a commercially viable device.

Fujitsu has built the Arrows NX F-04G for NTT DoCoMo using an iris scanner which made its debut at the Mobile World Congress only this year. It is supported by a high-accuracy iris recognition algorithm created by California’s Delta ID. The technology is said to be so good, it manifests an error rate of 1 in 100,000 only, the figure being based on the prototype unit.

The iris scanning feature can be employed to make mobile payments too. It adheres to the standards set by the FIDO (Fast IDentity Online) Alliance that counts PayPal, Google, Samsung, Microsoft and Lenovo among its supports. If you’ve used a smartphone like the iPhone or Galaxy S6, you’ll know that fingerprint recognition for unlocking such a device isn’t super-fast.

The same is true for the iris scan technology, and it’s slower than fingerprint sensors too. But we don’t see the point of having an unlock function based on iris authentication when fingerprint detection is equally secure and faster. The Arrows NX F-04G’s specifications cover Android, a 5.2-inch WQHD touchscreen, a 21.5MP rear camera, a 2.4MP webcam and a 3120mAh battery.

For now, it looks like NTT DoCoMo will be the only mobile carrier to offer the Fujitsu Arrows NX F-04G. Computerworld says that there are no plans to sell it outside Japan. It will be made available in three color choices of black, white and green. Buyers will have to pay a price of almost ¥55,000 (roughly Rs 29000) for it.
