Micromax handsets receive free data thanks to carrier BSNL

Micromax and state-run BSNL recently shook hands over an agreement through which the latter will provide free data on select smartphones made by the OEM, in an attempt to encourage mobile internet consumption in India. Based on the information available, customers will be entitled to as much as 2GB per quarter or 8GB a year.

Currently, a total of six Micromax devices fall under this partnership, out of which four of them are handsets, namely the Bolt A37B and A37 smartphones and X070 and X088 feature phones. The Funbook Mini P410I Android tablet is also part of the list along with the MMX377G 3G data card.

As per the deal, the aforementioned devices will not only get 2GB of data every quarter, but also 500 minutes of free voice calls. The promotion is said to be valid for an entire year and in order to avail these freebies, customers will have to subscribe to a Rs 153 plan which has a validity of 12 months.

What isn’t known is whether the free bandwidth pack is applicable when on 3G. But considering that the roster contains HSPA-enabled devices, we doubt that this restriction will be imposed. In recent news, Micromax launched its first device as part of the Android One program, the Canvas A1. The phone is an entry-level offering priced under Rs 7000 and it delivers a decent set of specs with assured updates to the newest version of Android for the next two years.

There’s no word on whether Micromax and BSNL will expand the free data promo to other devices from the OEM. The Bolt A37B and A37 smartphones are priced at around Rs 3510 and Rs 4000, respectively, while the P410i tablet costs Rs 7000. The X070 and X088 feature phones are tagged below Rs 1500.
